PROFILES OF AAPAM YOUNG PROFESSIONAL

David Walugembe

My experience with AAPAM dates back to 2006 when I was luckily nominated by the Ministry of Public Service to represent my country as a Young Professional at the 28th Roundtable Conference in Arusha, Tanzania. Meeting the CFTC-AAPAM selection criteria and excelling at my job as an Information Scientist, management forwarded my name to the AAPAM Secretariat in Nairobi. This marked the beginning of a life changing journey, filled with opportunities to learn, grow and serve above self.

The AAPAM Young Professionals Network has not only granted me the opportunity to get exposed, learn, serve and nurture my leadership skills but it has also increased my desire to contribute and be part of the change that I would love to see in Africa and world over.  Since 2006 each Roundtable Conference that I have attended has greatly contributed to my knowledge and understanding of how the African Public Services operate, the challenges they face and efforts being made to alleviate the situation.

It is through the AAPAM YP Network that I have had the unique opportunity of meeting and networking with several Young Professionals from across the African Continent thereby broadening my contacts base. Courtesy of the AAPAM YP Network I got a study trip to Toronto in 2007 where I had the opportunity to interact, learn and network with New Professionals across Canada. Overall, the AAPAM YP Network has increased my exposure and inculcated in me a greater sense of responsibility and feeling of belongingness to AAPAM and all that it strives to achieve hence an AAPAM advocate!

The major benefit of the AAPAM YP Network to the rest of the Young Professionals is that it grants them a platform to contribute to the deliberations of the Roundtable Conferences. The unique platform presented to the Young Professionals ensures that their voices are heard and that they too have a stake in the proceedings. In addition, the Network presents the YPs an opportunity to network and get exposed to knowledge, people (professionals and academia) as well as travel to different places! The Network also provides a mentorship forum for new colleagues making it easier for them to know and integrate into AAPAM.

Among the challenges faced the AAPAM YP Network is continuity by colleagues who are sponsored under the CFTC-AAPAM arrangement. This calls for regular engagements both within the AAPAM Local Chapters and across the continent.
